Buying a used car in Germany looks simple, but without a thorough check it’s easy to overpay or miss costly issues. Work systematically to stay safe.

Common pitfalls

Rolled-back mileage. Odometer “rejuvenated” while real wear and costs are hidden.
Hidden accidents/defects. Clean exterior, but repair traces and electrical issues inside.
Scam deposits. “Too good to be true” + request for advance payment — classic scheme.
Front seller / mismatched papers. Questionable IDs and ownership create legal risks.

How to protect yourself

Check VIN & history. Cross-check history reports, TÜV/Dekra entries, service invoices and papers.
Bring an expert. OBD scan, paint gauge, test drive, error/fault block review.
Verify seller & documents. VIN on body/glass/docs, seller’s identity, lawful basis for sale.
Write everything down. Price, condition, faults, spec — fixed in the contract only.

If a hidden defect appears after purchase

Inform the seller immediately, describe the issue and agree a solution. Ask for written confirmation — repair by the seller or compensation for repair in a workshop of your choice. Keep all messages and acts.

Can you arrange export plates and paperwork?

Yes. We assist with Ausfuhrkennzeichen and prepare the IAA-Plus/ATLAS declaration. We’ll tell you what data is required.

How is negotiation charged?
