How to Read Used Car Ads in Germany: What Unfallfrei, TÜV neu and im Kundenauftrag Really Mean
Sometimes a single German word makes a used car advert sound almost perfect: unfallfrei, scheckheftgepflegt, TÜV neu, 1. Hand. A short qualifier such as laut Vorbesitzer, soweit bekannt, im Kundenauftrag or Bastlerfahrzeug can change the meaning significantly.
A translator can tell you that fahrbereit means “able to drive” and unfallfrei means “accident-free”. But for a buyer, the more important questions are: who is making the statement, how precisely it is worded, what evidence supports it and whether the promise appears in the purchase contract.
⚡ How Should You Read a German Used Car Advert?
Do not look for one “magic” word that guarantees a good purchase. Read every important statement in three stages:
⚖ For example: Unfallfrei should match the bodywork and history; Scheckheftgepflegt should match the service chronology; TÜV neu should match the full HU-Bericht; im Kundenauftrag should match a clear seller structure in the Kaufvertrag.

🧠 A German Used Car Advert Is Not Just Marketing — It Is a List of Claims You Can Check
Most buyers read an advert as a description of the car: mileage, engine, specification, number of owners.
A more useful approach is to read it as a list of future questions:
- ❓ What does the seller state clearly?
- ❓ Where does the seller rely only on information from a previous owner?
- ❓ Which statements can be supported by documents?
- ❓ What can be checked directly on the vehicle?
- ❓ Which important promises should appear in the Kaufvertrag?
✅ The more specific the wording, the more useful it is to save it. “Klimaanlage funktioniert einwandfrei” is much more precise than a general statement such as “sehr gepflegtes Fahrzeug”.
💾 Before You Even Call: Save the Advert
A used-car advert can be edited or deleted immediately after the sale.
Before travelling, it is sensible to save:
📰 Full Description
Headline, main description and seller's notes.
🔢 Mileage and VIN
Especially if the VIN appears in the advert or was provided in messages.
💶 Price
The original asking price and later price changes.
📷 Photographs
Especially defects, interior, engine bay and documents.
👤 Seller
Händler, private seller or intermediary.
💬 Messages
Answers about accidents, mileage, defects and maintenance.
⚖ In practice, saving the page as a PDF and taking separate screenshots of important statements can be useful. Important promises should ideally also be reflected clearly in the purchase contract.
🚗 Unfallfrei
This is one of the strongest and most attractive statements in a German used-car advert.
But the word Unfallfrei is not a certificate that replaces a body inspection.
Normal wear, minor scratches and very small cosmetic damage should be distinguished from genuine accident repair.
⚖ For the buyer, the important point is that a serious accident repair, even if professionally carried out, does not simply turn the vehicle back into a car with no accident history.
❓ What to Ask the Seller
- Have any body panels been repainted?
- Which parts have been replaced?
- Was any body repair carried out by previous owners?
- Are invoices available?
- Are there photographs from before the repair?
- Were pillars, chassis rails, sills or the floor affected?
- Did any airbags or seat-belt pretensioners deploy?
🧰 How to Check It
A paint-depth gauge alone is not enough. A proper body check can include:
- paint-thickness mapping;
- factory spot welds;
- body sealant;
- fasteners;
- panel gaps;
- glass;
- headlights;
- structural sections;
- underbody;
- Airbag/SRS diagnostics.
📚 More on accident-damage inspection: Article 106 — accident-damaged cars in Germany .
🗣 Unfallfrei laut Vorbesitzer / soweit bekannt
These short additions materially change the nature of the statement.
The seller is no longer saying: “I confirm the complete accident-free history of this vehicle.”
Instead, the seller is limiting the statement to their own knowledge or repeating information from a previous owner.
⚠ This does not prove that the vehicle has been in an accident. But it means the buyer should place more emphasis on an independent body and history check.
🧩 Words That Change the Strength of a Statement
- laut Vorbesitzer — according to the previous owner;
- soweit bekannt — as far as known;
- nach Angaben des Vorbesitzers — according to information from the previous owner;
- angeblich — allegedly / reportedly.
🅿 Nur kleiner Parkschaden / fachgerecht repariert
Two words immediately require verification: kleiner and fachgerecht.
“Minor” is an assessment of scale, while “professionally repaired” is an assessment of repair quality.
❗ A scratched bumper, a replaced door, a repaired rear quarter panel and a reconstructed structural pillar should not all be described in the same way simply because the finished car looks good after paintwork.
📄 What to Request
- date of the damage;
- location of the impact;
- list of replaced parts;
- invoice;
- expert report;
- photographs before repair;
- information about airbag deployment.
🔍 The Goal of the Inspection
The goal is not simply to establish that a panel was painted, but to understand:
- the extent of the original damage;
- the quality of the repair;
- whether structural areas were affected;
- whether safety systems were restored correctly;
- how the history may affect future resale value.
🔢 Kilometerstand / Laufleistung
If an advert simply says 128,000 km, a buyer will normally understand this as the car's total actual mileage.
But nearby wording can materially change what is actually being claimed.
| Wording | Practical Meaning |
|---|---|
| Kilometerstand | Stated mileage / odometer reading |
| Laufleistung | Distance travelled by the vehicle |
| laut Tacho | According to the odometer display |
| abgelesen | Read from the instrument cluster |
| Kilometerstand nicht nachweisbar | Mileage cannot be documented |
🔍 How to Verify Mileage
A single paid VIN database is not enough. Build a chronology from:
- HU reports;
- service invoices;
- digital service history;
- authorised-dealer records;
- older adverts;
- control-unit data where available;
- steering-wheel wear;
- seat wear;
- pedal wear;
- switchgear wear;
- seat-belt condition.
⚠ A chronology in which mileage decreases, repeats for years or barely increases without explanation requires an answer before signing the purchase contract.
📘 Scheckheftgepflegt / lückenlos scheckheftgepflegt
These phrases sound very reassuring, especially to buyers looking for a car with a transparent maintenance history.
But the wording alone does not tell you:
- which maintenance work was actually carried out;
- how often the engine oil was changed;
- whether gearbox oil was serviced;
- whether the all-wheel-drive system was maintained;
- whether the timing belt or timing chain was replaced;
- whether a Hybrid Check was performed;
- whether invoices exist for major repairs.
⚡ What Does Scheckheftgepflegt Really Mean?
It is a positive signal, but not proof of perfect maintenance.
What the buyer really needs is a consistent chronology with dates, mileage, listed work and, ideally, invoices.
🔍 What to Check
- does the VIN match;
- are there gaps between service entries;
- do the mileage figures progress logically;
- who performed the maintenance;
- are invoices available;
- is there a digital service history;
- are expensive scheduled maintenance items documented.
| Phrase | What It May Mean | What It Does Not Guarantee |
|---|---|---|
| Scheckheftgepflegt | Maintenance has been recorded in a service history | That every required service was carried out completely and on time |
| lückenlos scheckheftgepflegt | A continuous service history is being claimed | That each entry represents the full manufacturer schedule |
| Serviceheft vorhanden | A service book physically exists | That it is complete, consistent and reliable |
📚 For a detailed explanation of service-history verification, see the Sicher-Check article dedicated to Scheckheftgepflegt.
👤 1. Hand
The phrase 1. Hand is usually perceived as a major advantage.
But one registered keeper does not automatically mean gentle private ownership.
🚗 The Single Owner Could Have Been
- a private individual;
- a company;
- a leasing company;
- a rental company;
- a driving school;
- a taxi operator;
- a corporate fleet.
⚠ One owner and 200,000 km of Autobahn driving can be preferable to several owners and years of severe short-trip use. But the history should support that story.
🔍 What to Check
- Zulassungsbescheinigung Teil II;
- type of registered keeper;
- registration dates;
- mileage progression by year;
- service history;
- interior wear;
- seller's explanation of how the vehicle was used.
⚖ In the purchase contract, it is preferable to record the concrete known number of previous keepers rather than relying only on the advertising phrase 1. Hand.
🧾 TÜV neu / HU neu
A fresh Hauptuntersuchung is certainly a positive factor.
But it does not mean the vehicle has undergone a complete pre-purchase inspection.
⚡ What Does TÜV neu Actually Mean?
The vehicle has passed the mandatory HU and was assessed against the applicable roadworthiness requirements at the time of the inspection.
It is not a prediction of the remaining life of the engine, DSG, turbocharger, DPF or hybrid battery.
📄 Ask for More Than the Sticker
Ideally, request the full HU-Bericht.
It may contain:
- remarks;
- minor deficiencies;
- odometer reading;
- inspection date;
- brake-related information;
- results relating to suspension and lighting.
| HU/TÜV Can Help Confirm | HU/TÜV Does Not Automatically Confirm |
|---|---|
| Roadworthiness on the inspection date | No future breakdowns |
| Basic safety requirements | Remaining engine or gearbox life |
| Some brake parameters | Internal DSG condition |
| Part of the suspension and lighting condition | Accident history |
| Mileage on the HU date | Complete mileage history |
⚖ HU is a mandatory non-destructive roadworthiness inspection. It should therefore not be treated as equivalent to a detailed pre-purchase diagnosis.

🚘 Fahrbereit
To an English-speaking buyer, fahrbereit can easily sound like “ready to use without problems”.
In practice, the wording is narrower: the car is capable of moving, but that does not guarantee long-term technical reliability.
🚩 A Fahrbereit Car Can Still Have
- a worn clutch;
- a DPF close to its limit;
- an oil leak;
- a weak battery;
- noisy suspension;
- a transmission with delayed engagement;
- major maintenance due soon.
❗ “The car drives” and “the car will not require expensive repairs” are two completely different statements.
🔍 What to Check
- cold start;
- idle quality;
- operating temperature;
- gearbox operation;
- clutch;
- brakes;
- steering;
- fault codes after the test drive;
- behaviour under load.
⚙ Motor und Getriebe einwandfrei / läuft gut
These phrases can sound technically reassuring, but they differ significantly in precision.
Läuft gut is largely a subjective impression.
Motor und Getriebe einwandfrei is a much more specific statement about condition.
⚖ The more specific the seller's promise, the more sensible it is to save the statement and, where appropriate, reflect it clearly in the Kaufvertrag.
🔍 Turn General Wording into Testable Facts
| General Statement | What to Check Specifically |
|---|---|
| Motor läuft gut | Cold start, idle, smoke, corrections, misfires |
| Getriebe einwandfrei | D/R engagement, shifts, delays, jolts, behaviour when warm |
| Keine Probleme | Full control-unit scan and checks for known faults |
| Läuft perfekt | Test drive under several operating conditions |
⚠ What Such Wording Does Not Automatically Exclude
- high oil consumption;
- faults appearing only when warm;
- DSG judder in stop-and-go traffic;
- clutch wear;
- high DPF ash loading;
- a turbocharger in an early stage of wear;
- problems appearing only under load.
✅ Practical approach: save the seller's statement, test each relevant system separately, and document what the inspection actually finds.
🧩 Quick Reference: What Terms 5–9 Really Tell You
| Phrase | Useful Signal | What Still Needs to Be Checked |
|---|---|---|
| Scheckheftgepflegt | A service history is being claimed | Dates, mileage, invoices and actual work performed |
| 1. Hand | One registered keeper is being claimed | Who the keeper was and how the vehicle was used |
| TÜV neu | Recent HU | Full HU-Bericht plus separate technical inspection |
| Fahrbereit | The vehicle is able to move | Start-up, transmission, brakes and test drive |
| Motor/Getriebe einwandfrei | A relatively specific condition statement | Verify it technically and preserve important promises in the contract |
🤝 Im Kundenauftrag
Buyers sometimes treat this phrase as an automatic sign that something is wrong with the deal.
That is too simplistic.
A genuine commission or agency arrangement in the motor trade is not automatically problematic.
⚡ What Does Im Kundenauftrag Mean?
The vehicle may be physically located at a dealership, advertised by that dealership and shown to potential buyers, while another owner remains the seller under the purchase contract.
The buyer's key question is: who is legally selling the vehicle and who is actually carrying the economic risk of the transaction?
🔍 Clarify These Points Before Buying
- who is the registered owner;
- who will be named as Verkäufer in the Kaufvertrag;
- who receives the payment;
- who actually owns the vehicle;
- whether the dealer is acting as a representative;
- whether there is a power of attorney or mandate;
- who answers questions about known defects;
- who would receive any later claims from the buyer.
| Question | What You Ideally Want to See |
|---|---|
| Who is the seller? | A clearly identified person or company in the Kaufvertrag |
| Who owns the vehicle? | Vehicle documents and a clear explanation of the ownership chain |
| Who receives the money? | Payment details that make sense within the structure of the deal |
| Who is representing the owner? | Vollmacht or another form of documented authority |
⚠ Risk increases when everything about the transaction looks like an ordinary dealer sale, but an unfamiliar private Verkäufer appears only at the moment the contract is signed.
👤 Privatverkauf
In a genuine sale between two private individuals, the contract may contain a broad exclusion of liability for unknown defects.
But the word Privatverkauf by itself does not answer who the real seller is.
❗ If the car is standing on a dealer's premises, the advert is published by the Händler, negotiations are handled by dealership staff, and a private sale contract suddenly appears at signing, the structure of the transaction deserves closer examination.
🔍 What to Establish
- who owns the vehicle;
- who set the price;
- who is organising the sale;
- who receives the money;
- who signs the contract;
- who carries the economic risk;
- whether the intermediary arrangement is genuine.
⚖ Even where a Haftungsausschluss is generally permissible, it is not a universal licence to conceal known defects. Restrictions arise, among other provisions, under § 444 BGB.
🧩 Practical Example
If the advert says Unfallfrei and the contract contains a general exclusion of Sachmängelhaftung, that does not automatically mean the specific accident-free statement becomes meaningless.
Important information should therefore not be left only in the online advert. Where relevant, it should be documented separately in the purchase contract.
🛠 Bastlerfahrzeug
This description should immediately increase your level of caution.
It may indicate that the vehicle has known technical defects or is being sold with the expectation that repairs will be required.
⚡ Does Bastlerfahrzeug Mean You Have No Rights?
No. The label itself is not a universal “liability off” switch.
Its significance depends on the complete contract, the description of the vehicle and the actual purpose and circumstances of the transaction.
🚩 Especially Contradictory Combinations
Take extra care if the advert says Bastlerfahrzeug but also claims:
- fahrbereit;
- Motor läuft einwandfrei;
- Getriebe ohne Probleme;
- TÜV neu;
- sehr gepflegt;
- ideal als Alltagsfahrzeug.
⚖ In a consumer transaction Händler → Verbraucher, specific deviations from the normal contractual requirements need to be brought clearly to the buyer's attention and expressly agreed. A general label such as Bastlerfahrzeug may not be sufficient on its own.
📄 What to Ask For
- a concrete list of known defects;
- a separate description of each significant fault;
- information about whether the car is driveable;
- current HU status;
- dashboard warning lights;
- engine and gearbox condition;
- permission for computer diagnostics;
- a test drive where this can be done safely.
❗ Buying a Bastlerfahrzeug as a daily driver without diagnostics, an underbody inspection and a realistic repair budget means buying with an undefined financial risk.
🌍 Nur Export / bevorzugt Export
This wording does not always mean the vehicle is bad.
There can be perfectly rational reasons, for example:
- vehicle age;
- low market value;
- high preparation costs for the German market;
- emissions classification;
- no fresh HU;
- the seller's particular business model.
⚠ But in some cases, “Export” can indicate that the seller does not want to offer the vehicle to an ordinary local consumer as a normal, ready-to-use car.
❓ Ask Direct Questions
- Why is the vehicle offered only for export?
- Can it be bought for registration in Germany?
- Does it have a valid HU?
- Which defects are known?
- Are there warning lights on the dashboard?
- Can computer diagnostics be performed?
- Is a test drive allowed?
- Can the vehicle be inspected from underneath?
❗ The combination Nur Export + no test drive + no diagnostics + no underbody inspection is a serious reason to walk away or at least to treat the transaction as very high risk.
⚖ Ohne Garantie / keine Gewährleistung / gekauft wie gesehen
These expressions are often grouped together, even though they refer to different legal concepts.
| Term | Practical Meaning |
|---|---|
| Garantie | An additional voluntary promise by the seller, manufacturer or another third party |
| Gewährleistung / Sachmängelhaftung | Statutory buyer rights relating to defects where the legal requirements are met |
| Haftungsausschluss | A contractual exclusion or limitation of liability, the validity of which depends on the type of transaction |
| gekauft wie gesehen | A contractual phrase that should not automatically be understood as excluding every possible buyer right |
🏢 Händler → Verbraucher
If a professional seller sells a vehicle to a consumer, a general sentence cannot simply erase statutory consumer protection.
Certain contractual limitations may be possible for used goods, but German law sets specific conditions for those limitations.
⚖ For used goods, the limitation period may under certain conditions be reduced contractually, but not below one year, and only if the requirements of § 476 BGB are met.
👤 Privat → Privat
A genuine private seller usually has considerably more freedom to exclude Sachmängelhaftung for unknown defects.
But that does not mean a known significant defect can simply be concealed, or that a specifically promised characteristic is always neutralised by a general disclaimer.
❗ For the buyer, the question “Who exactly is the seller?” can sometimes be as important as the technical condition of the car, because it affects the legal structure of the transaction.
🧭 Who Is Selling the Car? Why You Should Know Before the Inspection
| Scenario | What to Check | Main Risk |
|---|---|---|
| 🏢 Händler verkauft selbst | The company is named as Verkäufer and receives payment | Technical defects and the terms of the contract |
| 🤝 Im Kundenauftrag | Who owns the vehicle, who is Verkäufer, whether Vollmacht exists | Unclear liability structure |
| 👤 Genuine Privatverkauf | Seller identity, documents and vehicle history | Broader possible Haftungsausschluss |
| ⚠ Dealer Environment + Private Contract | Who actually conducts the transaction and carries the economic risk | Possible attempt to change the legal character of the sale |
🚩 Qualifying Words: Where the Seller Steps Back from a Strong Claim
German used-car adverts often contain expressions that do not automatically make the vehicle bad, but do change the strength of what the seller is saying.
| German Wording | Meaning | How to Respond |
|---|---|---|
| laut Vorbesitzer | According to the previous owner | Look for independent evidence |
| laut Tacho | According to the odometer | Verify mileage chronology |
| soweit bekannt | As far as known | Clarify exactly what the seller actually knows |
| vermutlich / wahrscheinlich | Presumably / probably | Do not treat it as a confirmed fact |
| Irrtümer vorbehalten | Errors excepted / information may contain errors | Confirm important specifications separately |
| im Kundenauftrag | On behalf of a customer | Identify the actual Verkäufer |
| Bastlerfahrzeug | Project car / vehicle requiring repair | Obtain a concrete list of known defects |
| Nur Export | Export only | Find out why and whether full inspection is possible |
🎯 Practical Rule
The more often an advert contains words such as laut, soweit bekannt, vermutlich, Export, Bastler and Kundenauftrag, the less you should rely on the advertising text alone and the more you should rely on documents and independent inspection.
📞 10 Questions to Ask the Seller Before Travelling to See the Car
Before driving across Berlin, Brandenburg or several hundred kilometres across Germany, turn the advert into a short list of direct questions.
The goal is not to interrogate the seller. It is to clarify the statements that may influence your decision to travel, inspect and negotiate.
- Is the vehicle accident-free? If not, what exactly was damaged and repaired?
- Is the stated mileage the vehicle's actual total mileage? Can it be documented?
- Is the service history complete? Are invoices or digital service records available?
- Who is the actual seller? The dealership, a private owner or another company?
- Are there any known defects? Engine, gearbox, electronics, air conditioning, suspension, emissions system?
- Are any warning lights currently illuminated?
- Can the vehicle be started cold?
- Is a test drive possible?
- Is computer diagnostics allowed?
- Can the vehicle be inspected from underneath?
💡 Written answers by email, WhatsApp or another messaging service are especially useful because they can later be compared with the advert, the documents, the inspection results and the Kaufvertrag.
❗ If a seller repeatedly avoids simple questions about accidents, mileage, defects, ownership or inspection access, that information is relevant before you spend money and time travelling to the vehicle.
🧭 Turn the Used-Car Advert into a Pre-Purchase Inspection Plan
A good inspection should not begin with a generic checklist.
It should begin with the claims made in the specific advert.
| Advert Says | Documents to Check | Vehicle Check |
|---|---|---|
| Unfallfrei | Repair invoices, reports, history | Paint thickness, seams, fasteners, structural areas, SRS |
| 128,000 km | HU reports, invoices, service history | OBD data and wear consistency |
| Scheckheftgepflegt | Service book, digital records, invoices | Compare maintenance with actual vehicle condition |
| 1. Hand | Registration documents | Compare mileage and wear with claimed use |
| TÜV neu | Full HU-Bericht | Independent technical inspection |
| Motor/Getriebe einwandfrei | Repair history, service invoices | Cold start, diagnostics, test drive |
| Im Kundenauftrag | Teil II, Kaufvertrag, Vollmacht | Clarify seller and transaction structure |
| Bastlerfahrzeug | Written list of known defects | Extended technical inspection and realistic repair estimate |
🎯 The Core Principle
Advert → Documents → Vehicle → Contract.
The four should tell approximately the same story.
If the advert says unfallfrei, the body should support it. If it says scheckheftgepflegt, the chronology should support it. If it says TÜV neu, the HU-Bericht should exist. If it says im Kundenauftrag, the contract should clearly show who is actually selling the vehicle.
🚩 Combinations of Wording That Deserve Extra Attention
No single phrase below automatically proves that a vehicle is problematic.
But certain combinations increase uncertainty and therefore justify a more detailed inspection.
🚗 Unfallfrei + soweit bekannt
The accident-history statement is limited by the seller's knowledge.
🔢 Mileage + laut Tacho
The displayed mileage should be checked against documentary chronology.
🛠 Bastlerfahrzeug + fahrbereit
Find out which known defects justify the project-car description.
🌍 Nur Export + no diagnostics
The buyer may be accepting a large amount of unknown technical risk.
🤝 Händler + Privatvertrag
Clarify who actually owns, sells and receives payment for the vehicle.
🧾 TÜV neu + many technical claims
A fresh HU does not verify every engine, transmission or electronic system.
🔍 Independent Used-Car Inspection in Berlin, Brandenburg and Across Germany
At Sicher-Check, we use the advert as one of the starting points for the inspection.
If the seller claims Unfallfrei, we pay particular attention to the body.
If the advert says Scheckheftgepflegt, the available service history can be compared with mileage and vehicle condition.
If the seller says Motor und Getriebe einwandfrei, those systems should be assessed through diagnostics, start-up behaviour and a test drive where the seller permits one.
📰 Advert Review
Important claims, limitations and unusual wording.
📄 Documents
Service records, invoices, HU reports and available vehicle documents.
🎨 Bodywork
Paint-thickness measurement, panel gaps and visible repair evidence.
🖥 OBD Diagnostics
Control-unit faults and relevant live data where available.
⚙ Technical Condition
Engine, transmission, brakes, tyres, suspension and electronics.
🛣 Test Drive
Driving behaviour, noises, vibration and transmission operation where permitted.
⚖ We do not decide the legal classification of the transaction and do not replace individual legal advice. But unusual seller structures, contradictory wording and discrepancies between the advert, documents and vehicle condition can be identified and documented for the buyer.
🏁 The Main Rule: Do Not Buy the Wording — Verify the Car
German used-car adverts can contain a large amount of useful information.
The problem begins when attractive terminology is interpreted more broadly than the wording actually supports.
🎯 Remember This Formula
Claim → Evidence → Vehicle → Contract.
A strong purchase decision is based not on one attractive phrase, but on consistency between all four.
Unfallfrei is a reason to inspect the body carefully.
Scheckheftgepflegt is a reason to reconstruct the service chronology.
TÜV neu is a reason to request the HU-Bericht, not to skip diagnostics.
Im Kundenauftrag is a reason to clarify the seller structure.
Bastlerfahrzeug and Nur Export are reasons to identify the technical risk before paying.
✅ The purpose of a pre-purchase inspection is not to find a completely flawless used car. It is to understand what you are actually buying, which statements are supported, what defects exist and which costs or risks may follow after the purchase.
❓ FAQ: German Used-Car Advert Terminology
What does Unfallfrei mean in a German car advert?
Unfallfrei means that the vehicle is being described as accident-free. The wording should still be compared with the body condition, repair history and available documents. Additions such as “laut Vorbesitzer” or “soweit bekannt” limit the statement to the information available to the seller.
What does TÜV neu mean when buying a used car in Germany?
TÜV neu or HU neu means that the vehicle has recently passed the statutory Hauptuntersuchung. It does not mean that the engine, DSG, turbocharger, DPF, battery or every electronic system has been comprehensively inspected.
What does im Kundenauftrag mean at a German car dealer?
It generally means that the dealer is offering the vehicle on behalf of a customer. Before buying, clarify who owns the vehicle, who will be named as the seller in the contract, who receives payment and whether the dealer is authorised to represent the owner.
Does Scheckheftgepflegt mean a car has a full service history?
Not necessarily. Scheckheftgepflegt indicates that service history is being claimed, but the buyer should check dates, mileage, workshop entries, digital records and invoices. “Lückenlos scheckheftgepflegt” is a stronger statement, but should still be verified.
What does 1. Hand mean in a German used-car advert?
It normally means one registered keeper. That keeper could have been a private individual, company, leasing firm, rental business or another commercial operator, so the type of previous use still matters.
What does Bastlerfahrzeug mean?
Bastlerfahrzeug generally describes a project vehicle or a car expected to require repairs. The label itself does not explain which defects exist, so the buyer should request a specific written list and inspect the vehicle accordingly.
What does fahrbereit mean?
Fahrbereit means that the vehicle is capable of moving under its own power. It should not automatically be interpreted as meaning technically fault-free or ready for long-term use without repairs.
Can a private seller in Germany exclude Gewährleistung?
In a genuine private sale, a broad exclusion of liability for unknown defects may generally be possible. However, the legal effect depends on the wording and circumstances, and a general disclaimer does not automatically neutralise every specific promise or permit deliberate concealment of a known defect.
Does “ohne Garantie” mean the same as “keine Gewährleistung”?
No. Garantie is generally an additional voluntary promise, while Gewährleistung or Sachmängelhaftung concerns statutory rights relating to defects. The two concepts should not be treated as synonyms.
Should I save a German used-car advert before buying?
Yes. It is sensible to save the complete advert, photographs, mileage, price and written seller statements before the listing is changed or removed. Important promises should ideally also be recorded clearly in the purchase contract.
Where can I get a used car inspected before buying in Berlin?
Sicher-Check provides independent pre-purchase inspections in Berlin and Brandenburg, with inspections in other parts of Germany available by arrangement.
